XLPE INSULATED PVC SHEATHED CABLES (IS: 7098 PART- I)

The conductor is insulated by a thermoplastic material i.e. polyethylene which is a linear chain compound after giving a special treatment called curing , the linear chain is changed into cross linked structure i.e. thermosetting compound . Thisematerial provides extraordinary electrical , thermal and mechanical properties to the cable like excellent di-electric , higher continous current rating , high resistance to thermal ageing etc.

ADVANTAGES of XLPE Cables over PVC

Excellent electrical & physical properties : High resistance to thermal deformation and the ageing property of XLPE cables provides higher continuos and short circuit current capacity of cable .
Higher current carrying capacity : Current carrying capacity of the XLPE cable is about 30% higher than PVC cable of same size.
Lower permitinity : Permitinity of XLPE is 2.3 and that of PVC is 7.

Lower di-electric loss : XLPE has lower di-electric loss than PVC cables

System protection : Charging current is considerably lower than PVC cable , which allow coarse setting of network protection system .

Emergency over loading : Can be loaded for higher current and long duration .

Resistance to heat : Because of cross linking, structure provides excellent resistance to ozone & heat.

Mechanical resistance : Due to thermosetting, conversion exhibits better mechanical property over PVC

Environmental & surrounding protection: Excellent mechanical feature provides protection against external effects. Resistance to acid & alkalies is excllent .
